Membership offers: read these four terms before you sign up

Intro discounts on memberships and subscriptions are real, but the monthly charge that follows is where the money goes. Four things to check first.

Membership brands give the biggest intro discounts on the internet. The catch is never hidden, it is just easy to skim past. These are the four terms we check before listing any membership offer.

1. When the charge happens

Fabletics VIP bills $69.95 on the 6th of each month unless you skip between the 1st and the 5th. Miss the window and you are charged, though the charge becomes a credit you can spend. Know the date before you join.

2. Whether credits or trials expire

Fabletics credits expire after 12 months. Free trials on services like Coursera Plus run seven days and then convert to the monthly plan. Set a reminder the day you sign up.

3. The price after the intro

Coursera Plus is $59 a month or $399 a year after the trial, with a 14-day money-back guarantee on the annual plan. Streaming services usually discount the first month only. Compare the regular price against what you would pay without the membership.

4. How to leave

Check whether cancellation is online or needs a call, and whether you can pause instead. A membership you can skip online in one click is worth more than one with a slightly bigger welcome discount and a phone-only exit.

Our rule

Every membership offer on Xoupons shows the recurring charge in 'See details', next to the intro offer. If a brand will not say what happens after the intro, we do not list the offer.
